This miniature ceramic replica of an amphora is inspired by ancient Greek and Roman earthenware storage vessels. It is porous clay on the inside and glazed on the outside with no lid. It is usually hung around the neck on a cord or ribbon. This petite amphora aromatherapy necklace gets “seasoned” with your personal blend of essential oils on the inside and on the handles. The clay absorbs your favorite essences and the aromas diffuse from the bottle throughout the day by body heat and evaporation. Once the amphora is seasoned, it takes fewer drops of essential oils to “reactivate” its scent. I recommended using thin (viscosity), clear essential oils with this type of jewelry since the clay is white and may discolor with darker, thicker oils. Using pure essential oils in your amphora can soothe your emotions, inspire creativity, boost concentration, help clear your sinuses, and more. Try citrus, lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, or fir essential oils in your amphora for a natural, aromatic lift every time to wear your aromatherapy necklace!

Floral Amphora Aromatherapy Pendant

To use, add 5-7 drops of your favorite essential oil inside the amphora and on the handles. Let the first set of drops absorb into the clay. Then apply a second round of drops to your desired aromatic intensity. You may find that you are creating a lovely, personalized blend of essential oils – a blend that will mature into a personalized, healing essence that is uniquely yours. Add more drops daily as needed to saturate the inside of the bottle. There should not be pourable essential oils in the bottle. If you want several personalized blends, you may want several necklaces. Or, lay your amphora in the sun and let the oils completely evaporate from the vessel and start over with a new blend.

Cold and Flu season is upon us in the winter-time and my family did not escape unfortunately. They did, however, not have very severe illnesses and they were very short lived. They might have missed one or two days of school, not 5 or 7 like many people we know. So, I thought I’d share with you what essential oils and herb teas we used that may have helped us cruise through the season pretty well.

H2EO Aromatherapy Diffuser

First of all, we used an Electric Aromatherapy Diffuser, the Spa Mist and the H2EO Diffuser. These 2 units use water with the essential oils and a strong diffusing action, sending the healing essential oils with the water into the air as a vapor. They do not use heat. The water vapor also adds moisture to the room, which is helpful in the winter-time.

We placed the diffuser right next to the sick person – on the bedside table when they were lying down, or on the table next to the couch if that was where they were resting. We did this during the day and all night long. When the diffuser ran low on water, we simply added more water and more essential oils.

Spa Mist Aromatherapy Diffuser

Our symptoms included congestion, excess mucous, headaches, sore throat, and sinus pain. The therapeutic essential oils we used for this were Plai North East, Ravintsara, and Helichrysum gymnocephalum, and probably Lemon or Lavender for their sweet scents (and therapeutic value). What was remarkable about this combination was the rapid pain relief. Sore throats and sinus pain were GONE overnight! And, the colds themselves were over within a couple more days.

I also prepared herb teas for my kids, which means they had to be tasty. I brewed 1 cup of Mullein flowers in one quart of water for 1/2 hour with honey, and strained it with a paper coffee filter. This is important! The filter gets all the fine hairs out of the tea that would otherwise irritate. Irritation is not good when you are trying to heal. The other kid-friendly tea I make when my kids are sick is Elder Berry tea. I brew 1/2 cup of the dried berries in a quart of water for about an hour or so with 2 cinnamon sticks and honey. Both of these teas taste very good and really help my children feel better fast. I get my bulk organic herbs at www.bestherbsforhealth.com.

As we chatted, I asked her how she was feeling these days. She had some health problems since falling and breaking her arm. She started crying and said she was really depressed. I asked if she was trying any essential oils for her sadness. She said no. So, I suggested she try some citrus essences. In the winter time especially, crisp, sweet citrus essential oils like Grapefruit, Lime, Tangerine, Lemon, or Orange are wonderful essences for the Blues. Their refreshing aromas instantly lift the spirits and may bring about memories of summertime, fresh delicious fruit, sunshine, childhood, and smiles. The citrus oils should be used in an Electric Aromatherapy Diffuser. Fill up your Ultrasonic Aromatherapy Diffuser with water and add 5 drops of your favorite citrus essential oils. Turn it on and enjoy the healing vapors.

I also mentioned Rose Essential Oil, in case she was in serious need of self-love – the kind of self-appreciation love, the “Yes I deserve it” kind of loving respect for one’s self. Rose is expensive, but powerful. One drop goes a long way. Use it in a massage or added to a carrier oil or fixative to rub on your neck and wrists. Rose, the Queen of flower essential oils, is precious. She will encourage you to love, be loved, and act loving. What a treat! If you are thinking about Rose, it just might mean that you NEED her.

I sometimes wonder what a 10-year old boy would like to smell in his diffuser. The other day, I bought some really nice aromatherapy soaps. My son just loved the bar of Bergamot-Lime. So, we decided together to try the blend in the aromatherapy diffuser in his bedroom. We placed 4 drops each of the Bergamot and Lime Essential Oils in the water dish and lit the candle. He loved it. He has always been a fan of Lime Essential Oil (because it smells like sherbet!).

Whenever someone is attracted to a certain aroma, I sometimes then look up the therapeutic qualities of the oil, to see if it is a good match for what that person might be needing in their physical or emotional life. Bergamot Essential Oil helps one to “relax and let go” according to Gabriel Mojay (Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit), and Lime can be used to “awaken”. Both essential oils are perfect for my son as he navigates through his childhood with his issues and gifts.

My lovely daughter, who is 11, has a soccer game today. She plays defense and goalie, and has a very powerful kick. Strong legs! However, she is worried that if the other team scores, no one will like her anymore. Poor thing. She is probably too sweet to play this game too much longer. But we will get through the season and do the best we can, of course. So, this morning I placed 10 drops of Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil and 3 drops Thyme Geraniol Essential Oil in her pretty soapstone aromatherapy diffuser. Why? To me, pink grapefruit is all about being light-hearted. Its perky, fun, refreshing frangrance can’t help but lighten the mood. And the Thyme Geraniol is for courage, which she will need today to play this game. This chemotype of thyme has a citrusy aroma and doesn’t smell like culinary thyme at all. It blends beautifully with the grapefruit. She will enjoy the blend in her room for about an hour as she gets ready to go. I’ll let you know if it works.

Update: I asked my daughter in the car on the way to the game how she was doing and she said, “I’m not worried about it.” She was very relaxed in the game, scored the first goal, and her team WON! Wohoo! (Love these oils!)

The courage to say “No”. I am writing this post as a woman small business owner. Saying “No” to business is a risky thing to do these days, and it takes courage. It is also essential if what is at stake is your own sanity.

Thyme is the herb associated with courage and has been used for thousands of years. During the days of Chivalry, maidens would embroider a bee hovering over a sprig of Thyme as a symbol of bravery and courage for their Knights before they rode off to battle.

I found two theories about how Thyme got the name we use today. It is believed that the ancient Greeks used a derivative of the Greek word “Thymos”, meaning “to fumigate” or “to perfume”, perhaps because she was used as incense for various reasons. The second possibility for naming also comes from a Greek word “Thymus”, which means courage.

In my office today, I lit a candle under my water-filled bowl on my favorite diffuser and added 6 drops of Thyme Linalool essential oil, 5 drops of Thyme Geraniol, and 2 drops of Melissa (for sweetness). It is a potent and powerful mix to support me and the courageous business decisions that need to be made today.

What else makes Thyme such an important essential oil that simply must be in your medicine chest?

You would not believe how incredible this modest little herb actually is! It is:

Antimicrobial

Anti-septic

Anti-virus

Ant-infectious

Antibiotic

Anti-fungal

Anti-parasitic

Immune Stimulant

Analgesic (pain relief)

Anti-depressant

Anti-inflammatory

Antispasmodic

Cough suppressant

Diuretic

Deodorant

Expectorant

Styptic

Astringent (shrink or constrict body tissues)

Diaphoretic (induces sweating, perspiration)

Carminative (anti-gas)

Nervine: sedative and tonic

Rubefacient

Aromatic

Amazing isn’t it? It can assist upper and lower respiratory, skin, nervous system, immune system, digestive, reproductive, and emotional/spiritual issues. I am a BIG FAN of Thyme!

Magical Uses of Thyme (according to
A Druid’s Herbal for the Sacred Earth Year)

Thyme is a house blessing herb and when used as incense, encourages health.

Thyme is an herb of Protection. Sprinkling Thyme infused water around entrances to your home will repel thieves. She will also attract customers to your place of business.

A bowl of Thyme leaves left exposed in a room will dispel melancholy and bring joy.

Rub it on your skin or carry sprigs for protection in crowds.

Thyme will mend quarrels among lovers.

Sprinkle Thyme water over your mate when sleeping to ensure fidelity.

Add Thyme to power bundles and love spells.

Use in rituals for purification, and to ease transitions in rites of initiation.

She brings courage, wards off nightmares, and enhances psychic powers.

Prepare a footbath using Thyme to wash away the sorrows of the past.

As an herb of Venus she bestows sensitivity, inspiration, and charm. Venus opens the secrets of the plant kingdom and strengthens connection with ancient nature religions.

Thyme is also an herb of the Sun. This strengthens ego, enhances personal will to manifest one’s divine purpose. Generosity, dignity, self-reliance and self-esteem are enhanced.

– To me, Thyme brings a lovely type of courage. A balanced, thoughtful, feminine, healing courage that is refreshingly different from the crushing, defeating courage many people think of today.

You can purchase many different chemotypes of Thyme Essential Oils here, if you like.

Many people only think of Ylang Ylang as an aphrodisiac. Actually, Ylang Ylang has many therapeutic actions. I use one drop of Ylang Ylang Extra Essential Oil on my heart every morning, because it makes me feel more loving. I do this for my children, because it helps me be a better Mom - kinder, gentler, more compassionate. Just one drop is all you need. I prefer the Extra because it seems a little less heavy than the Complete. You can also put a few drops in an aromatherapy diffuser to soften up the atmosphere for everyone. I like blending it with Bergamot Essential Oil in the diffuser (try 3 drops each). Ylang Ylang essential oil is a sedative and helps with insomnia. So, using a diffuser at bedtime with a couple drops of Ylang Ylang and maybe 2-3 drops of Palo Santo essential oil makes perfect sense. It relaxes and eases away the tensions of the day. What Mom doesn’t need help with that?
