We had a wonderful early morning thunderstorm that created beautiful skies at sunrise and a fresh clean scent in the air. In the desert, this is a lovely gift and an unusual way to start the day. To enhance the moisture and glow of the morning, I added generous drops of Fir Balsam essential oil to my aromatherapy diffuser. Fir Balsam is a soft, grounding essence that “heightens awareness and increases intuition” (according to Joni Keim and Ruah Bull, authors of Daily Aromatherapy). This uplifting essential oil is germicidal for the air and is helpful for all kinds of respiratory issues such as colds, sinusitis, bronchitis, and sore throat. It is a gentle tonic to the nervous system. It is gentle enough to use neat on the skin for muscular aches and pains, however diluting in a carrier oil is recommended.

If you enjoy the fragrance of a damp, pine forest, then you will love the mild, soft, and nourishing scent of Fir Balsam Essential Oil. It is a perfect essence to use in an aromatherapy diffuser.

We have a BIG weekend planned. My son’s first baseball tournament is this Saturday and Sunday. He was nervous last night and needed a good night’s sleep. He will be playing 4 games in 2 days, and he’s only 9. To help him I used therapeutic-grade essential oils in a candle diffuser in his bedroom. A very effective essential oil to use at bedtime is Ho Wood. It is very relaxing – a lovely sedative. Its fragrance is similar to Rosewood, which is one of my all-time favorites. My son chose the Blue Glass Aromatherapy Diffuser for his room because it “looks cool”, of course. (He’s so cute!)

Other therapeutic essential oils that have sedative qualities and are good for insomnia, or just promote relaxation are:

  • Chamomile
  • Hops
  • Rosewood
  • Lavender
  • Linaloe Berry
  • Neroli
  • Spikenard
  • Palo Santo
  • Tamala
  • Angelica Root
  • Valerian
  • Petitigrain

Sweet Dreams!

There are so many effective essential oils that can be used as an insect repellent. I haven’t used spray cans of chemical repellents (like Cutter) from the store in years! Here are a few suggestions you simply must try:

  • Geranium essential oil for mosquitoes. I apply a drop or two neat on the skin. 2 drops for each leg down to the ankles and 1 drop for each arm and neck. Using geranium essential oil neat on the skin does not bother myself or my children (I use less for little bodies). You can always blend the geranium in a carrier oil of your choice if you prefer.
  • Lavender essential oil to repel ants. I use drops of the lavender essential oil on a damp washcloth to wipe down surfaces in the kitchen – counter tops, cupboards, walls and drawers.
  • Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil to repel flies and no-see-ums. I use the same technique as the geranium.
  • Tea tree lemon essential oil to keep bugs out of the linen closet. I place 5 or so drops on a cotton ball and place it on a shelf in the closet – not touching any fabrics. I also use the “cotton-ball technique” in the kitchen cupboards.

To enhance all of these techniques, I also diffuse the therapeutic essential oils in the area I need them to repel the insects even more. And, they smell sooo good! You can purchase gorgeous, therapeutic essential oils here, if you like.

We have new neighbors. They are a nice family with two boys around my kids’ ages, which is great. It is so nice to have friendly neighbors with children. We live in a tourist / retirement community, so we have had our fair share of grumpy homeowners living next door that we had to tiptoe around. Anyway, what better way to welcome them than with a beautiful aromatherapy diffuser for their new home and a bottle of therapeutic-grade essential oils to go with it? I chose a beautiful mosaic glass aromtherapy diffuser I call Golden Horizon. I also gave them a bottle of Palmorosa essential oils to go with it. Palmarosa essential oil is lovely. It has a beautiful, lemony scent (geraniol) and is mild and non-toxic. It is a powerful anti-viral and is suitable against bacterial and viral infections of the lungs and throat. It is also used in skin-care products and is inexpensive! On an emotional level, Palmarosa speaks to compassion, adaptability, and security.

She (my new neighbor and future friend I hope)  loved it, by the way!

You can purchase Palmarosa Therapeutic Essential Oil and the pretty Golden Horizon Aromatherapy Diffuser here.

Medium soapstone aromatherapy diffuserAnother long week is coming to an end for the whole family. It is Friday afternoon and the kids just came home from school. I just finished lighting two diffusers in the home, one for my daughter, who is in her room doing her homework, and one for me – the Mom. My daughter, who is 11, is my mermaid. One of her personal essential oils is Maritime Pine, or Sea Pine – from France. She is easy going and light-hearted, and this essential oil suits her and supports the wonderful qualities her personality already has. In her room is a pretty soapstone aromatherapy diffuser that I just lit. I also added one drop of Geranium essential oil to the bowl of Maritime Pine and water, because it is pretty and uplifting, just like her.

Myrtle essential oilOne of my favorite essential oils is Myrtle. It is great for the respiratory system and has an aroma somewhat similar to Eucalyptus, but it is sweeter, more delicate - very crisp and refreshing. I placed about 10 drops in my candle diffuser and sprinkled a couple drops around the base of my neck and under my ears. Yummy! Definitely one of my favorite oils. According to Patricia Davis and her book, Aromatherapy An A-Z, Myrtle (Myrtis communis) essential oil is antiseptic, anti-bacterial, sedative in small amounts, astringent, and anti-spasmodic. It is commonly used for respiratory and urinary complaints, as well as haemorrhoids, and in skin care regimines. It is mild enough when used properly for children and the elderly. Try it! It is a beautiful essential oil.

Soapstone aromatherapy diffuser with a pretty sunflower patternWell, it is getting towards the end of the month and the bills are piling up. So, as I start my work day, I get my soapstone aromatherapy diffuser ready. I get a tealight candle and some fresh water. I then choose an essential oil that has the “magical” power to increase the money in my wallet. Today I will use bergamot mint. It has a very pleasant, pretty, light fragrance, that is perfect for the summertime. As I add water to the dish, light the candle and add the oils, I set my intention to work hard and to creatively allow money, abundance, and prosperity into my life. These days, who doesn’t need a little help with the finances, eh? According to Scott Cunningham, Magical Aromatherapy: The Power of Scent (Llewellyn’s New Age Series)there are several essential oils that can be used to expand your cashflow and feelings of personal prosperity: Lemon Balm (Melissa), Oak Moss, Vetiver, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Basil, and Sage. You can order all of these lovely, genuine and authentic essential oils here if you like.

During your mini-prosperity ceremony with the oils, make sure you are setting clear intentions and are visualizing what financial abundance looks like to you. This may be a bulging wallet, piles of money, feelings of security, or things that money can buy, like a new car, a vacation, or a home. Allow money to come into your life. Focus on feelings of prosperity, abundance, creativity, and wisdom. (You will need the wisdom when you have manifested more money - to save some and spend it wisely!) Don’t think about the negative (like the crushing burden of debt on your shoulders). Just think about the freedom and better life more money will bring to you and your family.

I live in Arizona, where it is hot, hot! My home office gets toasty and my productivity gets slower and slower as the temperature gets higher and higher. What helps cool me off and pick me up?  - Cornmint Essential Oil. I place a few drops in the palm of my hand and wipe it across the back of my neck and around my shoulders. It is very intense. Very “chilling”. Some people think it creates a burning sensation, when really it is a strong cooling sensation. The effect can last for over an hour. This aromatherapy technique IS NOT for the super sensitive or for children. I tried it on my son once and it drove him crazy. This “neat” application should be tried by people who are knowledgeable about using therapeutic essential oils straight on the skin and are comfortable with an intensely cooling feeling from the mint on the skin. If you are adventurous (and really hot), try it. If you can’t handle it, just be patient and the cold feeling will go away on its own in probably less than an hour. Another wonderful mint to use this way would be peppermint. It is a little sweeter and also cools just as well.

You can get Cornmint Therapeutic-Grade Essential Oil here if you like.

Rosemary essential oilI am preparing for a grueling 3-hour meeting with a client today. Three hours is just about the maximum time I can spend on one intensive project. So, I have my essential oils ready! Today, because I need to focus and be creative, I will be diffusing one of my absolute favorite oils – rosemary. This gorgeous essential oil was distilled right here in my home town, Sedona, Arizona. Very cool!  I am using a candle diffuser (because I love the ritual of lighting a candle), made in Morocco. It has a beautiful carving and it just sits on the corner of my desk, waiting to be of service. After the meeting, I know I will need to be refreshed. So, instead of taking a luxurious nap (I work out of my home), I will light my aromatherapy diffuser again and place an uplifting combo of bergamot mint and lavender essential oils in the water dish. That will definitely keep me going until the kids come home from school!

Hi there!

Welcome to my aromatherapy blog. I love aromatherapy. I use therapeutic-grade essential oils everyday and sell aromatherapy products and therapeutic essential oils. The purpose of this blog is to share information about the oils and life. I am a big fan of diffusers and wanted to just be able to write about great books I have read and the many, many reasons one would diffuse essential oils everyday. I actually have different kinds of diffusers throughout the house and use them for different reason and for different people. I would love to hear how you use essential oils too. Please share!
